In the apple orchard of a small Oregon town, Lucy always teased her husband Tom for “planting time in the orchard”—his watch had tiny apples printed on the dial. Every morning, he picked fruit right on schedule by the watch hands, even carving the ripening date of their “fruit of love” on the case back.
Last year, before a heavy rainstorm, they rushed to harvest the last basket of Fuji apples. Tom’s watch slipped into the mud by accident, but he shielded the basket first: “The watch can be fixed—but our ‘fruit’ can’t go bad.”
